80 mile, 3 days Shropshire Way Walk Challenge
An incredible 3 days has come to an end! Martin Rowley, Simon Line, Molly Line, Ben Furnival, Bob Beech, Cam McDonald, Tom Storey, Chris Green and Richard Marshall (2 days) completed the challenge at 5.30pm on Easter Sunday finishing at the Truck stop in Tilstock, Whitchurch. 9 hours of walking on Good Friday over hill after hill after hill set the scene for what was ahead, PAIN and TORTURE!!!! 10 hours of walking on Saturday to get us to Shrewsbury and then 9 hours of walking on Easter Sunday to get us to the finish line.
Every one of us suffered along the way, physically and mentally, however the fantastic group banter dragged everyone through, there were some very tough moments/times where we all thought ‘what are we doing?’ Day 1 was very tough but the weather was kind and the views were amazing over Shropshire (and many other places), Day 2 was a killer, to encounter 6 inches of fresh snow whilst climbing and walking along the Stiperstones was the lowest part (mentally) of the 3 days, tough doesn’t come close to what it was actually like, every step was a slip, no grip going up and no grip coming down. That evening whilst having a pint and food in Shrewsbury we all looked beat! Day 3, the thought of it being the final day got us up and going. Flying over Haughmond Hill and Grinsehill we shut out the pain and got the job done! All of us finishing together (within 5 minutes anyway!) and celebrating with a glass of bubbly before getting cleaned up and having a pint or two in the Hinds Head!
Special mention must go to Sue Rowley who was the support car, making sure all our needs were met, cups of tea, coffee, cakes, running repairs, checking in at hotels, getting supplies for all of us. We could not have done it without Sue!
Well done TEAM!

BUS TRIP TO EDGBASTON FOR THE FIRST DAY-NIGHT TEST
Our expedition to Edgbaston for day one the very first day-night test in the UK proved to be a great day out. We were treated to glorious weather, superb batting from Cook and Root and manic entertainment at the end of the day from the barmy army to round things off. Who could ask for more?
Under the hot sunshine it was good to see the boys (and girls) rehydrating frequently like true athletes with intermittent visits to the Fordhall Farm food trailers providing further sustenance. To allay any confusion about the new lunch break being at tea time and the tea break starting at 7.40pm, the boys decided to eat and drink all day to cover all options. This proved to be an inspired decision because as the lights came on…
..and the run-rate slowed, the barmy army began to move into top gear over in Bay 24.
This was where the wisdom of taking on all that fuel throughout the day finally paid dividends as the better refreshed individuals in our party were able to join the growing throng to provide us with stirring entertainment for the last hour and a half. Thanks lads. To cap it all when Alistair Cook’s innings reached an unbeaten 150 runs just before the close of play the ovation from the crowd was truly memorable. A wonderful finish to the day!
A full report on the atmosphere at Edgbaston can be found here:
Many thanks are due to Roly Tavernor for organising a great day out and to Simon Line for his magnificent effort behind the wheel (including somehow finding a free parking space 200 yards from the ground). Also thanks to Ben Furnival for displaying his previously unknown navigation skills to get us through Birmingham in the morning (although, for some reason, he was not so useful on the way back).
