About/History

Norton-in-Hales Cricket Club is based at Norton-in-Hales community playing field. The Cricket Club was first established in the late 1920’s and moved to its current location following the Second World War. League cricket was first played at Norton-in-Hales in the 1970’s when the Club joined the South Cheshire Alliance League. In the mid-1990s the reorganisation of local cricket in line with ECB policy led to the demise of the Alliance League and Norton-in-Hales then joined the North Staffs and District League.

Within three years the Club was promoted as champions to the North Staffs and South Cheshire League. Promotion to the North Staffs and South Cheshire League brought about the most notable on-field success in the club’s history. Immediately following promotion to the League, in successive years Norton topped Division 1 and then become Premier League champions. A quite remarkable turn of events! After one more year in the Premier League Norton were relegated for being unable to field a sufficient number of junior sides and from that point the club slipped down the divisions to revert to its former status as a village cricket club.

Arguably, however, Norton’s greatest challenge lay ahead as in 2008 the cricket pavilion was destroyed by fire. At this point the fate of the club lay in the balance.

However, after a magnificent effort by club members and the local community (and generous support from fellow NSSC League clubs) a new building has been completed which hopefully will ensure that cricket can continue to be played in the village for many years.
