2014/2015 Report

Pre-Season Report

2014 proved to be a successful year as the 1st XI under the leadership of James Ruscoe were promoted as champions of the Stone League back to the North Staffs & South Cheshire League.
Club officials realised the need to strengthen both squads ahead of a challenging season and we are delighted to announce some notable signings listed below.

Jack Furnival has resigned from Wellington CC. Jack is a very talented top order batsmen and opening bowler who has represented Shropshire at youth levels including the Under 21’s, he is also part of the EPP setup with Worcestershire CCC.

Michael Dyer from Barlaston CC. Mike has a wealth of experience and has captained a league winning side at this level. Mike is a genuine all-rounder, who will add bite to the middle order and provide support to the opening bowlers.

Paul Gould from Market Drayton CC. Paul has played in the league with Hanford CC before his return to Shropshire. Paul is an experienced and very well respected 2nd XI bowler and middle order batsman, who will be pressing hard for a 1st XI spot.

Kasim Abass from Leycett CC. Kas re-joins us after a couple of seasons away. Kas is a steady top order batsmen who offers some very useful medium pace bowling, which will be tricky to play in the early season.

Zafar Iqbal from Barlaston CC. Our most coveted signing is Zafar who is renowned not just locally but nationally and even internationally as a superb strike bowler and middle order batsmen. Zafar has spent the last few seasons in the league firstly with Hanford CC where he claimed 98 wickets and scored just short of 500 runs. And then with Barlaston where he suffered with injury but still managed 65 wickets and nearly 300 runs. Zafar will add real fire power to our bowling with pace and seam and has the ability to destroy bowling attacks with his expansive batting.

The 1st XI team under the leadership of Ben Furnival and management of Simon Line, look well set for an exciting season. The availability of Simon Belfield and Kyle Morgan to complement the younger talents of The Claydon brothers (Luke and Callum) and Warrington brothers (Jack and Eddie), look to have a very exciting squad who can beat anyone on their day.

The result of the winter strengthening is that the 2nd XI under the leadership of Martin Harper look well placed for a very good season. The experience of Matt Riley, Martin Rowley, Paul Evans, Rob Warrington and Tim Ruscoe (all dropping down from 1st XI) will be invaluable for nurturing through some of the younger talent including the Hollinshead brothers (Liam and Lloyd), Matty Day, Tom Furnival, Fred Furnival, George Tavernor, the Kendall brothers (George and Henry) and last years 2nd XI player of the season Seb Ruscoe.

In addition the 2nd XI will also have last year’s core players including Mike Bircher and Jon Day to select who combined with 1st XI team squad players Gary Rudd and Paul Gould will offer further stability and experience to what looks the most promising 2nd XI squad for many a year!

The Under 17’s run by Roly Tavernor, ably supported by Rob Warrington look to have a very good squad who more importantly will hopefully have an enjoyable season.

Off the field the club go from strength to strength. A number of additions to the committee have really boosted morale. Roly Tavernor steps into Paul Evans shoes as chairman (Paul remains as vice chairman). Jon Day with his wife Jo will be in charge of the website & bonus ball. Rachel Offland takes the roll of membership secretary. Everyone’s merits in abundance already with the establishment of a first-rate website, fully subscribed bonus ball scheme and additional fundraising support. Simon Line and Simon Belfield have also come onto the management committee to join Martin and Sue Rowley, Jim Rowley, Tim and James Ruscoe, Rob Warrington, Martin Harper, Gary Rudd and Ben Furnival.

Fundraising has taken place during the winter, which included a very successful Christmas walk with over 100 attendees, race night in the Hinds Head and of course the bonus ball scheme. Thankfully we have raised enough to purchase a new sight screen and also help fund the refurbishment of the bar area and redecoration of the community sports pavilion.

We would like to thank all of our members, supporters and sponsors (listed on the website) for their continued support with a particular mention to all of the family of AR Richards Ltd and the team at Joules Brewery.

Here’s to an enjoyable and successful 2015 season!
